Yeah! THIS is the right way. We've had a bunch of new folks in recently, and I've been doing the same thing. I will do legal plays - asking them to play correctly even if the error is in my favor. I will even occasionally allow them to go "back in time" - putting their dice back on the board and then correcting a play. But never let a newbie get away with something that is procedurally illegal.
