Run? Down? Slot? Point?

Running into the outfield with this 54 may seem natural, but abandoning the anchor now creates attacking options for an opponent who has timing problems. White is front-loaded, with 11 checkers in the zone. That is enough to make me look elsewhere.

Slotting the 4pt is another possibility, but may be too aggressive. With 2s and 9s as cover numbers, Blue is an underdog to make the 4pt even when White misses.

If Blue were guaranteed to remake the bar point next turn, making the 2pt now would be the best play. He has, of course, no such guarantee, and the 7pt is the better blocking point. He should keep it.

That leaves down. When White misses the fly shots, Blue will have a flexible position from which to add to his prime. And in case White hits, there are plenty of returns.

My vote: D (Down) = 13/9, 13/8

Mike
