If that gap were on the six or five point, it would be an interesting problem. With a 3 point gap, this is a clear double / pass. The lower gap allows more rolls to make the missing point. And, they allow the trailing checkers to better control the outfield while leaving fewer fly shots. Several books including Kit's have reference positions for these problems.
