It was second and goal from the 6 with 1:04 remaining.

The play consumed 7 seconds.(!) If Bradshaw had downed the ball on the 1, let's say NE uses their final timeout at :55. Now it's third down. Manning takes a knee, consuming 1 second, and the 40 second (right?) play clock starts. So they kick a field goal at :14 and the play consumes 2 seconds, and NY kicks off with 12 seconds left. NE can either accept a touchback or try to return the kickoff. Probably this is the difference between getting to run one play from scrimmage or two.

NY can try to consume a few extra seconds on their third down play, but then they probably fumble the ball and Coughlin gets fired.
