This may be too naive a viewpoint, but I start by ignoring shots and looking for the move that will most help me build the points I want on my side of the board. 13/10 does that better than 17/14 does. Sure, White has a lot of rolls that hit, but who cares? We're committed to a backgame at this point. Put your checkers where you want them.
