I think maybe you mistakenly believe that holding on to the midpoint is useful for escaping the back men, picturing yourself running to the mid, surviving a white attack, and then scrambling home.

In general when you have an advanced holding game like the 20 or 18 point you are better off clearing the mid and using those checkers for timing purposes while you hope to roll a double to get home with your back men.

There are a couple of positions in "new ideas" which drives this point home if i remember correctly.

In this pos it is particularly clear because you can't realistically hope to retain your mid point much longer.
