Pittsburgh Tournament

In Response To: Pittsburgh Tournament (Steve Hast)

Thank you, Steve, for choosing to lecture me rather than Jeb. I said I was inclined to not attend the Labor Day Pittsburgh tournament, Jeb said he was definitely not attending any tournament run by Rob. I, subsequently, only tried to objectively answer UBK's question. You did nothing in attempt to clarify the outstanding questions; in fact, you obviously avoided answering them.

I, too, believe two tournaments can exist on the same weekend if far enough part and if regional in nature. I think this is more appropriate on short weekends with considerable distance between. The longer holiday weekends seem more appropriate for greater travel and for more of a national flavor. Granted, Madison is not the easiest place to get to; but, if you'll pardon the geographic perspective of this Texas boy, Pittsburgh is not exactly LAX, ORD, DFW, or ATL either. Despite the 600 miles separating Madison and Pittsburgh, I regard them as being in the same part of the country.

I don't think your posting did you any favors as every example presented of two competing tournaments resulted in the demise of one -- soon, if not immediately.

I'm confused by your posting. You seem to have been involved in planning the Pittsburgh Labor Day tournament. Are you involved in the Pittsburgh Labor Day tournament? or are you only defending Rob? If involved, you should clarify the circumstances leading to the establishment of the Pittsburgh tournament and the cancellation of the Madison tournament.

I like Rob and am confident he acted, from his perspective, with only the best interests of backgammon in mind. I am only disappointed if one tournament was founded causing the death of an established tournament if, as reported and if accurate, no communication, no attempts at accommodation, and no attempts at mutual compromise survival were made. Rob has been quite successful in directing the Pittsburgh tournament after taking over for you and, I'm confident, he'll also do a great job with the Pittsburgh Labor Day tournament.

Note, I said I was disappointed. Didn't say I was mad, certainly didn't say I was boycotting the tournament, and I would never encourage anyone else to do so or organize any such efforts.

I enjoyed the Madison tournament and hate to see it pass -- I attended almost every year, if not. I am glad to see a Labor Day tournament option now exists in Pittsburgh for those wishing to continue to play on that holiday weekend -- and I greatly appreciate the efforts of Rob, and all directors, for the efforts they expend in holding tournaments for all of us.
