Daily Quiz 12 february 2012
Number 1:
Blue threatens to hit the 13-blot, but after hitting I think the position is only DP when blue doesn’t enter. In all other situations I would evaluate the position as No Double.
The white 5-anchor is extra strong because of the 11-point on distance six, apart from doubles only 52 clears this point safely (when blue would throw 52 here I would preclear with 11/6 11/8). When white enters on the 3-point, this pseudo-anchor is pretty strong and rather unthreatened.
The position would be DT if blue had cleared the 11 point, at an equal score it then would be DP.
Answer: No Double
Number 2:
After this move blue is behind, but leaving a double direct shot at the barblot will bring him too much behind. 24/20 7/5 24/22 gives blue a very strong anchor (comparable to the situation in number 1) and good playability with the spares.
Answer: 24/20 24/22 7/5
Number 3:
The problem with hitting is the large number of return shots: 22/36, since some of those are blitz-hits on the 5-point effectively the return shots are about 18/36. So hitting seems allright if blue is already behind in his racing chances. After a move like 6/1 the Keith count would be 77-85 (white to move), so blue is clearly behind. What is the rest value of the 5-anchor after 6/1? Most of the time white will put the 2 loose blots into his board and blue will have to leave the anchor then with any 4 or 5 and break his 4-point with a 2 or 3. So there will not be a lot to play with after this moves.
Answer: 20x17 6/4
