There are 2 reasons for the newer processor to be faster

  • Overall, Sandy Bridge processors are about 20-25% faster (clock for clock) to Nehalem for the same code.
  • AVX (the new SIMD instruction) allow for speed up of calculation for program written specifically for that new processor

XG2 will take advantage of both (XG1 does not support AVX): an Intel Core i7-3930K calibrate at 7.0-7.2 Mpos/s on XG

Note that Ivy Bridge is coming up soon (March?) and Intel is saying it will give a 20% boost, however only the socket 1155 line will be upgraded in march.

If you want performance AMD is not a good choice, it is unfortunate as some competition would have driven the prices down... but the AMD FX line was a big disappointment.
