There are 2 reasons for the newer processor to be faster
Overall, Sandy Bridge processors are about 20-25% faster (clock for clock) to Nehalem for the same code. AVX (the new SIMD instruction) allow for speed up of calculation for program written specifically for that new processor XG2 will take advantage of both (XG1 does not support AVX): an Intel Core i7-3930K calibrate at 7.0-7.2 Mpos/s on XG
Note that Ivy Bridge is coming up soon (March?) and Intel is saying it will give a 20% boost, however only the socket 1155 line will be upgraded in march.
If you want performance AMD is not a good choice, it is unfortunate as some competition would have driven the prices down... but the AMD FX line was a big disappointment.
