The sort of thing I think Bill is talking about is this. Say I'm on the receiving end of an opening blitz cube. I need to estimate how many gammons I will lose. The point is that the percentage of gammons I lose will depend not only on the arrangement of checkers, but on the score. So if I'm going to memorize a bunch of reference positions, it seems that I would get more accurate estimates if I memorize not just how many gammons I lose for money, but how many gammons I lose at GS. That would enable me to interpolate or extrapolate the percentage of gammon losses to other match scores.
