This reminds me of another story:

In the 1970s I went to college in Michigan, which did not observe daylight savings time. My activist roommate was going door-to-door circulating petitions in favor of DST. An elderly resident read through the petition and refused to sign saying, "I'm sorry young man, but my plants need all the sunshine they can get!"
