With the caveat that my contributions often add more to the noise than the signal, let me thank you for the opportunity to address this position. Jeremy Bagai has a couple of similar positions in his book Classic Backgammon Revisited. In those problems, prior authors Dwek and Magriel both recommended the “action play,” i.e, moving up to the opponent’s bar point in order to force an exchange of hits. In those positions, however, Blue had an excellent alternative. He could build his own board instead of blotting on the bar point. The bots strongly favor making a home board point over playing up.
Here Blue can make his 11pt with the 2, and then choose between playing up to the bar point or down from the midpoint. I would choose down. White has no good 6s at present. Why give him one? Blue is already split. That should give him plenty of indirects at the targets that will inevitably materialize in White’s outer board.
