Based on your rollout result, I wouldn't call 23/18 "wrong." However, it's a fair question what the merits of 13/8 are compared to 23/18. First of all, putting a second spare on the 8pt in the opening is not as bad as is commonly thought. It usually makes your doublets play even better than they already do, and gives you more ammunition for attacking. 23/18 provokes contact, which is double-edged. Usually you benefit from a blot-hitting contest because White has only one checker back, but it does leave you more exposed to an attack if White rolls well. The race is close and your split checkers already exert some control over White's side of the board.
