The risk of incorrectly assessing your own or your opponent's flaws is usually too great to warrant any large deviation from the technical correct move or cube decision. When in doubt, strive for technical perfection rather than trying to optimize for your opponent's quirks; or as we sometimes put it "When in doubt, make the right play."

What better players divide from the others is, beside many other things, to get a grip for thinking about gammons as the backbone of the game called backgammon. And such a rule of thumb, despite it's usefulness in practice for the dummies, can turn into a bad habit, which can influence other areas.
