The pip count is nearly a tie. Blue has the better anchor, but White has the better structure.

In the first position, hitting with the 1 requires playing the 4 down from the midpoint (or else relinquishing the 10pt). The resulting blot on the 9pt gives White a convenient 6 to play from the bar. Were there an alternative for the 4, I would consider hitting. In this position, however, I would make the 9pt, priming White’s anchor.

In the second position, Blue can avoid giving White a good 6 when he hits, but must forego the opportunity to make the 5pt. Once again, I would make the point.
