OT Instaling updates

My comment was tongue in cheek. Usually if something goes wrong you can enter safe mode and try to correct it (as you suggest using F8 while windows is booting up), or you can attempt to use the windows recovery CD (if you have it).

Generally speaking on modern versions of Windows failed updates are generally not catastrophic if aborted.This can't be said for earlier versions of windows especially Win98 and earlier.

I do have a preference for Linux and BSD distros myself, but I do understand that people want to use windows software. If you want best of both worlds of course you can use virtual machine software to run Windows on Linux, or Linux on Windows.

These days my main laptop runs windows and I connect to remote virtual machines. One may ask why a Linux guy uses Windows on his laptop. Primarily because the battery life is better on Windows at present with my equipment.
