My main experience with Nactation since last, however, is how good a tool it is for studying and learning openings. Realising that the game is too much fun to completely rid myself of, I am trying to make more efficient use of the time I do spend on studying it. While still in the process, I can say that I think studying the openings by creating a setup where you can immediately obtain positions and their rollouts using the Nactation sequence might be THE way to go.
You've hit on an important aspect. Nactation makes it easier to record, store, find, access and quickly interpret rollout data.
On a related topic, reducing a string of numbers (traditional notation) to a single letter (Nactation) creates a much more digestible bit of information. To aid memory further, I have created little mnemonics for myself (by combining letters in various ways) to remember best play rankings, exceptions at different scores, and so on. Early game positions, pairs and trios are easier to remember as well.
With the updated parts, is the idea that for practical play, the non-stylistic letters can cover everything?
Yes, the areal letters alone can precisely describe any legal play. And, for plays that arise in real games, you use capital letters a great majority of the time.
The style letters (FHKLPTWX) are non-essential and can cause a conundrum when misused in complex situations. Even so, I recommend that you keep style letters in your repertoire; your reader can grasp them more easily, quickly and comfortably (when you judiciously deliver them -- in simple or obvious situations).
