In Response To: Nactation - Game 2 (Nack Ballard)

Thanks for the support! I had a lot of fun writing this one.

Below I discuss a couple of additional errors/issues I have found. These are on top of the ones that you have already identified in your post. I had discovered some of the ones you highlight, but there were a few I completely missed. Thanks for giving such a thorough reading.

21$ = 13/11 6/5

I copied some boiler plate that still used the name “Most Points Convention” instead of the current “More Points.” Slot Rule #2 should read something like this:

2. More Points Convention — Make or keep as many points as possible.

As well, I am unenthusiastic about the first sentence (which I cribbed from the Nactation Tutorial!). Somehow, it is not direct enough. What about the following?

You slot by moving a checker onto a vacant offensive point. If, after slotting, any part of the roll still remains, the balance is played down (i.e, to or within the outer board).

63O = 13/7* 9/6

I would like mention that O (Outer) is a mneumonic reminding us that one die is played to or within into the outer board, and the other is played jumping out of the outer board, into the inner board.

54O = 13/4

I need to mention $ (as you did).

63O = 13/4

Once again, I need to mention $. (I think I need to do more cribbing off your work!)

In the sentence:

By the 6pt Convention, a blot destination in the inner board is preferred when it is closer to the 6pt.

I need to say “blot or spare” instead of just “blot.”

64K = Bar/21* 13/7*

This is the one where I guessed you would not go minimalist! Silly me.

The fuzziness needs to be removed in the definition of K. See my closing below.

65S = Bar/20, 13/7

After repeatedly defining “down” to mean “to or within” the outer board, I must not use that term to describe S and Z. Unfortunately, that’s just what I do here.

For the record, in a roll of non-doublets, S and Z move one checker on the far side of the board, and the other from the far outer board into the outer board. When the second half of such a play is made entirely within the outer board, it is nactated in the B (Both) family. Otherwise, of course, S splits with the larger die, and Z splits with the smaller one.

H (Hit) Family

41H = 24/20* 10/9
63O = 13/7* 9/6
31R = 18/17*/14

All of these plays describe playing down as a requirement of the H (Hit) family. All should be updated to conform with your post. Your explanation there is great!

Closing

I would like to update this, and include many comments and contributions from your posts. The updated version might then be reposted at the root of a new thread, so that it can serve as parallel and adjunct to the Nactation: Study, Tutorial Supplement, and Annactated Game from last year.

Before doing that, however, I think its about time for a “Clarifying the H (Hit) Family” thread. I’ve delayed it now since last December, when I first mentioned it. Back then I was hitting you with one question after another at such a rapid-fire pace, that I thought it appropriate give it a rest for a while. Plus, as I recall, you mentioned that H, K and X were undergoing tentative redefinitions, so there was not much point in asking anyway. Well, if you don’t mind, the moratorium is over. I’m going to collect my thoughts, and start some sort of thread in a couple of days.

Thanks again for all your help.

Mike
