In Response To: Taking a principled stand on clocks (+1) (Colin Owen)

In my club meeting tonight I imposed clock use on the last three matches, and that permitted us to finish on time. No one timed out, and the players who were clocked adjusted well to the mechanics. A month ago I imposed clock use on a guy ... a neighbor of mine ..., and he refused to comply ... said playing with a clock would make him nervous. Because of his refusal to comply, I disqualified him from that night's tournament and later removed him from our club's roster. I later told him that I'd help him overcome his clock phobia by inviting him to play some practice matches at my house, but he has yet to take me up on my offer.

Our club's baffle box/dice tube preference rule has had no impact on attendance. Only two bought dice tubes, and I haven't seen either of them in several months. When they were attending no one complained about its use. No one in our club has yet bought a baffle box.

I'm pro-clock. Initially people ... like my neighbor ... are intimitated by them and feel that they have to play unnaturally fast to avoid timing out, but the reality is that you have a lot more time than you think. The best way to overcome clock-phobia is to have people get acclimated to their use in their local clubs ... preferably first by practice/no-penalty matches as you advocate.
