I believe intermediates should also have mandatory clocks as well, as it only adds to their enjoyment of the game for all of the same reasons it adds to the open players....reasonable scheduling, fewer roll complication, not having to put up with someone taking forever to make a decision. To make it less intimidating, simply give intermediates more time...longer delay time and more total time. After playing with it once or twice and realizing there really is no time pressure unless you are unbearably slow, you will find it a real plus.

As for the expense of clocks and having them around, everyone with a smart phone can download excellent chess clocks for free...they work just fine.
