In Response To: A New Argument for Clocks (Phil Simborg)

The U.S. Tournament Rules provide that players are expected to play at a reasonable pace. This is obviously subject to definition and interpretation, but still, it's a rule. Even assuming for the sake of argument that you have some kind of ethical duty to consider every last possibility for as long as you can, that duty does not trump your duty to follow the rules.

I, too, think clocks are preferable to a rarely-enforced rule of reasonableness, but I think this argument proves too much. Since no one takes their thought process to the extremes you suggest, the implication is that we are all guilty of unethical conduct. I think that's a bit much.
