Do you also feel an obligation to travel first class and stay in the best hotel in the neighborhood? Surely being well rested would help your game as well?

In other words, I think this argument is a stretch (while I believe clock in general are good).

I think you (in the sense of the French "on") have an obligation towards other participants to play within the rules, to avoid playing bad on purpose, and to be a good sport. I don't see that you'd have an obligation to maximize your likelihood of winning within what the rules allow (that would be another discussion though).
