A New Argument for Clocks

Steve, my argument is not that we are all guilty of being unethical if we don't use a tremendous amount of time on every play ....
But it was. You said: I really am morally bound to take several minutes on [all nontrivial moves] .... For me NOT to take 5 or 10 minutes on every move is clearly not living up to my obligation to the tournament, to my calcutta partners and buyers, and to myself.
It was this overstatement that I believe Steve rightly objected to.
I don't see the "ethical dilemma" that you were worrying over. Without a clock, you ought to play your best, given the time constraints imposed by the need for a tournament to proceed at a reasonable pace. With a clock, the same. You still need to find a balance between playing well and playing reasonably quickly. The difference is that the time constraint is objective -- imposed by TD and thus known to all; is imposed uniformly, consistently and continuously; and better ensures that a tournament will indeed proceed at a satisfactory pace.
