When we clear the 6pt, we will need to roll a 1 or 2 or 34 next time. Otherwise, we will be forced to expose a blot when we roll any of the other 14 numbers.

If we clear the 5pt instead, high doublets and certain 1s and 3s will cause problems. Specifically, 66 55 44 61 51 63 53 and 43, 13 numbers in all, will be bad. Leaving the gap is slightly safer, and as a bonus, we get to bear off a checker.
