Casper correctly points out the tempo value of hitting. The other thing to note is that all the Magriel safe/bold criteria point in the same direction here. You have more checkers back, a race deficit, an anchor, and the stronger board. So you're not afraid of leaving blots if you thereby accomplish important tactical goals. There's no need to adopt a defensive posture in this position. Since White has such a weak forward position, and you have four checkers back, your midpoint isn't needed to rescue your back checkers. You can definitely win going forwards from here.
