Have I gotten the following correct as the top three members in decreasing order of the J family (one part is played down to or within the outer board, 2 parts jump the bar and 1 part is played within the homeboard) correct ? Not sure about the symbols within underlined families.
63S-64X-31E-53K-52>-44
13/9/5* 7/3 6/2* > 13/9/5* 7/3 5/1* > 13/9 8/4(2) 6/2*
All three moves make the maximal possible number of points in the homeboard for the J plays, but the first two at the same time keeps the total number of made points maximal. First move hits on a higher point than the second for the other hit.
Relatively speaking, you have ranked those three plays correctly: they are first-, second- and fourth-ranked within the J family. The third-ranked play has been inserted below in blue font.
J = 13/9/5* 7/3 6/2*
j = 13/9/5* 7/3 5/1*
J = 13/9 8/4 7/3 6/2*
j = 13/9 8/4(2) 6/2*As you point out, within the underlying definition of J (one portion down, two portions jump, and one portion inside), the number of inside points (as usual) overrides the hit/most/6 rule.
The first and second play rank higher than the other two because they hit an extra checker. The first play ranks higher than the second because it hits on a higher point (as you said). The third play ranks higher than the fourth because it keeps an extra point (8pt + 3pt vs only the 4pt).
All four of the above plays make a second inside point. The fifth- and sixth-ranked plays in the J family, 13/9/5* 8/4 6/2*, and 13/9/5*/1* 8/4, make only one inside point.
Nack
(Sorry for the delayed reply. I've been catching up anti-chronologically.)
