Definitions of H, K and $

In Response To: Definition of $ (Slot) (Taper_Mike)

I had a feeling there was a loose end, but after all my days absent I had trouble remembering it and then finding your post.

I agree that mentioning the slot part of the move first is an advantage, and your suggestion of inserting "all or part of a roll" addresses my earlier objections. For that matter, I see no need to exclude plays such as bar/5 (with double 5s) as a slotting move.

When I originally created the definitions for H, K and $ (the ones tagged with a down convention), I did not give much thought to doublets. Requiring "down" when there is only one leftover portion works great, but requiring it for more than one leftover portion does not work so well.

Best, I believe, for H, K and $ is to require the underlying concept for one portion (or two in K's case), then entry and/or forced (when applicable) for remaining portions. Beyond that, require down for one portion, and in the (unusual) case there is still a balance beyond that then hit/most/6 applies. The usual (underlying) caveats that H must hit loose and can't hit twice, and $ hits outside only incidentally, apply.

The definitions of H, K and $ can be shaped accordingly. As always, I prefer to keep the general definitions as easy and elegant as possible and teach intricacies by example, but it is still important to have all the bases covered. Style letters are paradoxically the simplest to grasp on the surface yet the most the most difficult to define and imnplement perfectly for all cases.
