The emotion of the crowd affecting players' performance must be a big factor. (OK, I'll allow turf vs grass and a few other familiarity factors, too.)

Beyond the pitch familiarity other factors could include 1) That the visiting team probably had been busy traveling ii) The visiting team probably had to stay in a hotel. Possibly sleep is affected. iii) Perhaps there is a referee bias

It is a big reach to conclude that the crowd affecting the players must be a big factor.
