Blue to play 41

The plays Casper mentions are relatively straightforward to nactate.

D = Down (13/9 8/7)

Members of the D (Down) family move checkers in the ratios Far:Down:Jump:Inside = 0:2:0:0. Two checkers are played down, to or within the outer board. No play in the Down family adds a new point to Blue’s blockade, so switching points, from the 8pt to the 7pt, ranks at the top of the family. The reason is because the 6pt Convention gives preference to made points that are closer to the 6pt.

O = Outer (8/7 8/4)

Members of the O (Outer) family move checkers in the ratios Far:Down:Jump:Inside = 0:1:1:0. One checker is played to or within the outer board, and the other is played jumping over the bar, into the home board. The name “Outer” was chosen because one checker moves into (or within) the outer board, and one checker moves out. Once again, switching from the 8pt to the 7pt ranks at the top of the family.

P = Point (8/4 5/4)

So long as all parts a roll are dedicated to making a single new point, it does not matter that you are leaving blots behind.

A = Attack (8/4 5/4)

The alternative areal (area-based) Nactation is A (Attack). In the A (Attack) family, checkers move in the ratios Far:Down:Jump:Inside = 0:0:1:1. One checker jumps over the bar, and the other moves inside. Of all the plays in the Attack family, it is clear that the one that makes the 4pt ranks atop the family.

The third of Daniel’s choices is a little trickier.

n = near (13/9 5/4)

Plays in the N (Near) family move checkers in the ratios Far:Down:Jump:Inside = 0:1:0:1. One checker is moved down, to or within the outer board, and the other is moved inside the home board. By the 6pt Convention, the capital letter is awarded to the play that switches from the 8pt to the 7pt. The lower case letter then goes to 13/9 5/4.

Quiz: How would nactate your favorite hitting plays in this position?

Mike
