Worst things about 18/15 18/14* are (1) it leaves two blots (2) gives up our "the bar point is not an anchor" anchor. But it (1) clears the 18 point, essential to converting to a race-with-contact (if we don't do it now, we will probably face the same problem of clearing the 18 vs. Opponent's 2 outfield points for several more rolls (2) sends a 2nd checker back, gaining 14 pips (3) leaves only 13/36 immediate returns (4) if we are missed all of our numbers safety at least 1 blot and about 1/3 of our numbers safety both blots.

You might compare these features to the other plays. 8/5 8/4 for instance leaves only one blot but 14 immediate hits, doesn't clear the 18, doesn't gain in the pip count, if we're missed 28 (I think) numbers make a point on or with the 5 point blot, but about 1/3 of numbers must expose a blot either on the 5 point or elsewhere on the board
