That is a summery of the Nichomachean Ethics. Aristotle believed that the purpose of human life was to reach a state of happiness (`Eudaimonia', a form of good spirit). Therefore the way to attain happiness was to strive for personal excellence (`Arete', personal greatness).

So it really isn't the tragedy of life captured in the banalities of repetition. And what would be a better witness for this process as learning and playing the game of backgammon?
