Hit or not hit?

I would play 7/4. Most people like to give reasons to support their play. While this is the right aproach, I catch myself that this is not the way I play! I first find a play that I like and then find a reason why I like it. Call me what you like but I am what I am. Now, why do I like 7/4 better than any hit? It is not because what happens on next exchange of rolls. I dislike hitting because if i am missed, I will have hard time bringing those troops home anyway. Sure, if I hit and he stays out and I cover and he stays out I will have a cube, but first of all I am thinking with one still back, 3 checkers on the midpoint and 8 pt gone it should be a take. Second, this sequence is not that likely to ocur. Meanwhile, if I just keep it safe for a roll I will have a 5 pt board. I can jump the prime and he misses. I may hit a fly shot. He may attack and I may hit from the roof. In other words, several winning ways, which is usually good. Hitting and breaking homeboard looks to me like putting all eggs in one basket.
