IMO, your reasoning best fits -2-4 & -4-4 (and other scores) but not at the given score. My reasoning is incorrect; blue in most cases can't help it if he wins a Gammon. As you've stated, blue will hit but only as a measure of defence. Hanging back with 5/3 is the "Gammon orientated play".
