I had similar thoughts. In retrospect, the play's not hard to find -- (a) suppose Blue doesn't move from the 20 point -> no good plays (b) suppose Blue moves both checkers from the 20 point -> 20/17(2) 13/10(2) soon looks best of these (c) suppose Blue moves one checker only from the 20 -> 20/14 13/10(2) or 20/8.
