I'm not sure what you want to know that you can't get from Zare's website. I don't want to repost Zare's entire GammonVillage article because you're supposed to pay for it. Here are a couple of excerpts that may be of interest to you.
In the unregistered version, "best" means you are trying to minimize the effective pip count, but in the registered version you can choose to play to save the gammon, or to maximize your cubeful equity.
After explaining the distinction between one-sided and two-sided databases, he writes:
In ZRD, I use a compromise which I think maximizes the utility. ZRD does not focus only on one side, but your opponent's position is restricted to be a pure n-roll position, as though all of your opponent's checkers are on the ace point.
In the section about cubeful equities, he writes:
You are not allowed to win a gammon, but your opponent can when the cube is on 2. G means your opponent should play on for the gammon. This occasionally appears when there is no gammon possible with correct play due to roundoff errors. I don't know of a good way to eliminate these since there are real times your opponent is supposed to play on for a microscopic chance of a gammon.
