I would hit 3/1* in the first position but not in the 2nd position.

In the first position the gains are great if he rolls a 3 and stays out with 1 guy. If he comes in and hits on the ace, then you'll have 2s, 3s, 4s, 5s which return hit, some of which are double hitters. This should buy you some time to maybe run 1 checker to safety or rearrange your outfield blots.

In the 2nd position the lose hit is only a single hit, meaning he will have many rolls to rehit or make points. I don't see any reason to risk having another checker sent back in the 2nd position.
