Thanks for the info. The times I programmed closer to the metal are quite some time ago and even then I only programmed Unix where such issues couldn't happen unintenionally at that times. But things have changed, just look at one of my favorite book at that time: Rochkind: "Advanced Unix Programming". The number of pages in the first and second issue (which came close to 20 years later) increased drastically. Unix isn't the small elegant operating system anymore (and Windows probably never have been) :))
