We love the wild plays here are BGO, and this is another one where second best is not even close. My over-the-board move was the third-best U (Up) = bar/22. My (defective) thought process went something like this:
Steps 1 and 2 are fine. A better step 3 is:
- Oh, crap!
- No matter what I play, I’m leaving a double shot in the far outer board.
- Therefore, I should try to minimize blots and shots.
- U (Up) looks to be the safest (because making the 23pt is unacceptable here).
Is there any duplication available to help minimize the risks while continuing to develop naturally?
Later, I can always go to “minimize blots and shots,” but first I need to stop off at, “look for duplication.” Often they are the same.
As Dmitriy first noted, W (Wild) = bar/23 6/5, duplicates White’s 4s everywhere. Numbered from White’s perspective, we have:
Another issue I need to keep focused on is how early it is. My opponent has an undeveloped board. Hitting me outside won’t often let him build at the same time. Even if I am hit twice after slotting, I won’t be out of the game by a long shot.
- Hit: 6/2*
- Hit: 11/7*
- Hit: 24/20*
- Cover: 15/11
