In some primitive societies, inter-village rivalries are characterised by the men gathering on the boundary between the two communities, usually a river, and waving their penile gourds at each other, while offering challenges. Forbearing to look when the other village does this may be interpreted as a mark of civilisation, rather than of cowardice.
