The punishment definitely fits the crime. Multi- accounting has been cracked down big time by PokerStars especially. It is stated clear in their rules now that it is illegal.
It was kind of a huge thing about a year or 2 ago where ZeeJustin and JJProdigy both got banned for multi-accounting.
When a good player plays multiple accounts he is essentially stealing equity from all of the other honest "good" players. IF a good player who has lets say a ROI% of 100% plays a 200 dollar tournament. Essentially in long run that means every time he plays a 200 dollar tournament he is making 200 dollars. So if 2 good players of equal skill are playing same tourney and one has 4 entries in it, his equity is $800 compared to $200 to the other player.
Not to mention the aspect of what could happen if both of the accounts end up at same table some how. Now you have a person with 2 accounts at same table and 2 sets of holecards!
It's also just terrible for tournament poker, if you have all the top players multi- accounting, now you have a much tougher tourney and it is lowering the edge of everyone else in the tourney also. Also the fish are not gonna get lucky and cash as much as they would if there are twice as many good players as there is supposed to be in the tourney.
You have to have harsh punishments to multi-accounters because it is definitely cheating and is a very serious issue for tournament poker.
