There is no shortcut. Let me give you an example from another gambling field. Vincent, a member of the surviving sepsis campaign guidelines panel wrote a paper with the title "Give your patient at least a fast hug a day". Fast hug is an acronym (like repetez or prat) and stands for feeding analgesia sedatation thromboembolie prophylaxis head elevation ulcer prophylaxis glucose control. Vincent stressed the factor, if you at least take care once a day for this basics, you will gain more decreased mortality rate then with complicated and difficult technics.
For backgammon, i think, it is the same. And i will stress the factor, that you can't divide both parts. To play with PRaT, you have to know the checkerplay and his goals.
Given limited time, i would stress the knowledge of the opening, race evaluation, basic game plans/issues and reference positions. And like the fast hug, basic reference positions. A reviewer of the article from Vincent remembered, as he read the article, instantly a baseball game. The defeated team just didn't executed the basics well.
