I don't usually look at the OLM any more but the odd subthread about variance reduction caught my eye.

Stick can correct me if I'm wrong, but I think his point isn't that you should go through all your opponent's responses on every play. Rather, one should be prepared to do so if necessary, and should also learn to recognize when the position calls for it. Here, eschewing the anchor is a very tactical play, with a good chance that one side or the other will hit during the next exchange.
