Thanks, Chuck, for presenting this interesting and difficult series of backgame positions. My goal in #14 is to make an outside prime, so I start by making the bar point. After that, the 9pt is my next target.
I can diminish the odds that White makes a third anchor, and perhaps gain some timing, by making the dump play, 8/2*. If I am going to be successful in building an outside block, I am going to need to recirculate some of the spares on the 5pt and 8pt. The dump play begins the process.
Finally, I move one of my blots within range of my 9pt target.
o (outer) = 17/11, 13/7(2), 8/2*
I don’t really like hitting on White’s midpoint. It is my second choice.
A Note about Nactation
For a roll of doublets, the underlined families denoted by one of the letters in the word OCEAN, contain plays that move checkers the ratio 1:3 or 3:1. Specifically, plays in the underlined O (Outer) family move checkers in the ratios Far:Down:Jump:Inside = 0:1:3:0 or 0:3:1:0.Between the play above and 17/11 8/2(3), which should get the upper case O? To answer, apply the Hit Convention. It states that making a new point in the inner board trumps any hit. Therefore, 17/11 8/2(3), which makes the 2pt, gets the capital O.
