Also, there's collusion and then there's collusion, and one type is worse than the other.
The one type is hidden, hard to detect, fairly rare one should hope, and not to your benefit.
The other type is in plain view, common, and not necessarily adverse to you. You find this type all the time in California card rooms where (a) a large % of players are regulars, know each other, may be friends or married couples (b) English-only rules are not enforced (c) blinds get split frequently (d) friends headsup soft-play frequently "I check all the way" -- "Me too!"
ad (b) I sat a table where for a while two players talked constantly in Chinese. One was a novice, the other was -- get this -- an off-duty dealer. Since the one was clearly a novice ("first time") and I knew the off-duty well enough to believe that they weren't playing two players to a hand, I didn't care. Neither did anyone else at the table.
ad (d) Just because two players soft-play headsup doesn't mean they explicitly collude to hard-play to squeeze you in the middle. OTOH, it could be -- might be -- that you, the stranger, don't get the same action from everybody else that a regular gets.
ad (d) Soft play is collusion, period. But is it always cheating?
