I'm only a donk. But the upsides for me are: Adding two men to the zone a tempo (the hit keeps the enemy off balance, only with sets he can improve his structure), unstacking the midpoint, making a valuable point in the offense and still early in the game, keeping the anchor. And as you said, no returns, gaining ground in the race.
