Transparent and Non Transparent Draws

Many years ago, in a faraway land, I played in quite a few tournaments run by a TD who always played in the jackpot event of his own tournament. I will call him PTD for "playing tournament director." There was always a public draw for everyone to see and the small folded pieces of paper with names were drawn out of a hat. I noticed that PTD got a bye every single time, and I also noticed that the tough players were always all on the opposite side of the draw.

I believe there is a very good chance (well over 90%) that the draw was rigged, especially since I knew of other dishonest things PTD had done.

If a TD wants to produce a rigged draw, picking names out of hat in public is no barrier to him. Trust me, it can be done. Have you ever seen a magician, either live or on TV?

What it comes down to is that there has to be an element of trust in the tournament director. Maybe you can never be 100% sure about anyone, but the alterative is to stay home and never play in a tournament. I trust Mike Main as much as I trust any TD. I certainly would prefer a draw done on Mike's computer to the public draw done by PTD.

Another consideration is that it saves a lot of time between the Calcutta Auction and the start of the tournament to do the draw on the computer. Time is a very important factor in running a tournament. Starting the main event fifteen or thirty minutes earlier makes a big difference.

Another reason to prefer a computerized draw shown on a monitor to the physical cardboard draw sheet: When there are few people in the tournament, it makes little difference, but when there are 128 people in the draw, it is a very annoying and time-consuming experience to fight the crowd to find your name on the draw sheet. Have you ever seen 128 people trying to find their names on the sheet? It can waste ten or fifteen minutes.
