Suppose A is gin to be off the gammon but must play it correctly by say using an ace to plug a gap instead of bearing in. I've seen players mess that up many times. A rule that allows a player to claim no gammon before a piece is off is faulty in that a player might have made that error but if it goes to the TD the player gets time to think about it and also may realize something is up when the claim is not granted.
