The reason you don't want to change from a long match format to a short best of 3 format is that imo it is easier to play shorter matches mainly because there are less real cube actions (you don't have real cube at crawford, -2,-2, post crawford and to some extend some bizarre scores like -4,-2 often produces trivial actions). I have a bit of data which suggests that both my own and my opps PR are quite lower in 5 point matches than longer matches. There is so little edge in backgammon so we don't want format which makes most of the matchups close to coin flips.

As I have said befor I am proponent of slot rule / Simborg rule / or even double slot rule for master side events, this little rule definitely complicates the game and make it more interesting for top players.
