I disagree strongly. I think that a rule should never assume that a player finds the correct play, no matter how trivial. And I think this is very different from allowing for illegal moves.
Of course, as stated in other post I don't like the "gin wins" rule to start with, but I dislike it even more if you have to quarrel about whether the clinching move is difficult to find or not.
Example, I have 1 checker on five, 10 on the ace and 4 off - you have a checker on the bar and a prime in place should you hit something. I roll 63, take two off, then count my checkers off, takes back the play, plays 5/2/0, count my remaining checkers on the ace, takes back the play again and times out. Am I gin?
