The title of World Champion is sought by all those who have attended the event (unless you were just there for a lovely vacation) too bad for those who did not win the title. It still remains a nice event to attend and meet a lot of cool people who share a passion.
Yes, the tournament is losing popularity but so is Backgammon just about everywhere. Yes, changes can be made to the format and even the venue – move it around the world as some have suggested.
The Giants of Backgammon is partially a popularity contest. One of the factors that makes it so, is that if I am a tournament player and one of the candidates is a buddy of mine, then I’ll probably put him somewhere in my ballot but if it is a candidate that I envy or don’t like (for any of a million reasons) I will not vote for him at all, or just put him way down on my list even though I know he deserves to be in the top 5 or wherever.
(By the way, I have never voted for the Giants but have always supported the ranking list because just like the title of World Champion it is a way of knowing who are the best in the world.)
Eighteen of the current top 32 Giants are from the USA and only five from Denmark. That does not seem accurate to me. There were 167 ballots accepted of which 56% of the ballots came from voters outside the USA. I’d like to see a breakdown of how many ballots came from each country (not sure if that is already published somewhere). For example, why isn't Christian Munk-Christensen not even in the top 64?
So, if we want a ranking list based on the strength of the players then we have Iancho Hristov’s list for now, which he continues to improve over time.
